Comenius Project: Our Environment:A lifetime Treasure

Meeting in Slovakia

During the last week of April, our school Prof. Guze Aquilina Sannat Primary School and Special Unit, together with other partner countries, which are Italy, Greece, Slovakia and Turkey, attended the second meeting of the Comenius Project. The meeting was held in Roznava, Slovakia.

Project Coordinators and accompanying staff during a meeting with the mayor of Roznava, Slovakia. As the aim of the project is to create environmental awareness among our children, the five schools gathered as much information as possible about all the countries involved. This information was presented during the meeting in the form of power points, charts and exhibitions.

During the meeting the co-ordinators and the staff member also discussed the online test, which is being prepared together with the website for all those who access the internet. In this website one can find a display of all the information, pictures, power points and so on gathered by all the students attending schools from the five partner countries.

Attending this meeting also helped us to learn about the different culture, traditions and opinions not only of the place we visited but also of the other people from different countries who went there for the same purpose.

One can also learn the difference between the schools. As on one hand, our school in Sannat caters for a primary and special unit totalling up to 280 students, the school in Roznava Slovakia caters for a total of 600 students with age ranging from 5 to 15 years. In our school like in many countries the kindergarten section is also found within the school set-up. However, in Roznava the kindergarten is another different school.

In a school of a total of 600 students it was very difficult to find 50 students who are capable of speaking in English. This is because in Roznava there is a great lack of English teachers.

During our visit we were able to experience and discuss not only environmental issues which are the main topic of the project, but also how these can be integrated across the curriculum. This can be considered as an example of how schools can become learning organisations.
